I just Lost 55 lbs!

And It Was EASY!

I just lost 55lbs and I'm still counting! I have to honestly tell you that it was much easier than I thought it would be. I want to share with you my story in hopes that you might be inspired if you or someone you know is thinking about starting a diet and exercise routine. Also, if you are pregnant and maybe getting a little down about all the weight you're gaining, you should know that it can come off faster than it came on! I was about 20 lbs over my desired weight when I got pregnant, back in March of 2008. Than during my pregnancy I gained another 40lbs. Going into labor I weighed about 210lbs. And, much to my dismay, I didn't lose nearly as much as I thought I would just from giving birth. I weighed about 198 coming out of the hospital. Over the next 2 months I maintained the same weight because I was in a lot of pain due to some complications of my c-section and I was unable to exercise and I didn't watch what I ate. I pretty much kept eating as if I was pregnant, lol. Finally, I looked at some pictures of my new baby and me and I couldn't stand the way I looked. I made a commitment to my self and my baby that I was going to lose the weight and get healthy. My baby deserves to have me at my best. Remembering this was my motivation. I'm a single mom and a college student, so knew I needed to find more energy if I was going to be able to do it all. I now weigh 143 lbs, and I feel great!

Here's how I did it:

I made a list of my goals-
I made a list of my weekly weight loss goals, starting with the fastest rate of weight loss in the first few weeks and then slower weight loss in the weeks to follow. I also made a list of my personal goals which included being able to jog for more than 60 seconds and having the energy to be a super mom for me new little man.

*~*REMEMBER*~* You can start seeing results IMMEDIATELY, this will give you a new motivation and sense of how easy this will really be!

~*Third*~
I got the info-
I researched some different diet plans. There are good and bad reviews for every single one, but I liked what I read on the South Beach Diet.

~*Fourth*~
I found enjoyable ways to exercise-
I discovered that I absolutely love exercising that relaxes me and doesn't feel strenuous. I enjoy taking my baby for long walks around the lake and he loves it too. Also, I discovered that yoga is not only good for your body, but it's good for your mind. In the near future, I'm going to dedicate a post to yoga, talking about it in greater depth. Green Moms!

The first time I heard about people "going green" I figured it was just another Hollywood fad, and it would pass. I now realize that it's more than just a trend, it's an effort to better the world we are giving to our kids. So what, now I have to change my whole lifestyle, or something? NO! Transitioning into a greener mom can be easy. You don't have to make drastic changes. (But you can if you want!) It is important to remember that making changes to your lifestyle shouldn't stress you or your budget. There are many ways to live greener without spending a fortune, in fact, most of my tips will save you money. I know I personally can't afford solar panels on my house!

Simple Steps to Greener Living


Be Garbage Conscious!
Separate what you throw away into recyclable, compost, consumable and toxic. Call your local garbage service and find out what to do with toxic waste such as paint, paint thinner, car oil, etc. Recycle and reuse when possible. Buy in bulk to minimize excess packaging.

Shop Greener-Remember, Less Waste=Less Cost!
Next time you go shopping for the usual household items, swap out what you normally use for more eco friendly products where possible. For example, buy
  • rechargeable batteries
  • mesh coffee filters as apposed to disposable
  • Use organic household cleaners
  • Energy saving light bulbs, like Energy Smart and SLI Lighting
  • Recyclable and refillable office supplies, like refillable ink cartridges, HP Office Recycled Paper, Paper Mate Earth Write recycled pencils,
  • DON'T BUY BOTTLED WATER! Get a brita filter or something! Bottled water creates SO much unnecessary waste!

Use Reusable Shopping Bags/Totes
Make it fun and fashionable! There are lots of cute and eco friendly totes, that you can use over and over, wash if they get dirty and even have your logo embroidered on.

Drink "Certified" Coffee
Certified coffee is coffee grown under a certain code of conduct, such as the UTZ certified code. This Code is an internationally recognized set of criteria for professional coffee growing, which includes socially and environmentally appropriate coffee growing practices, and efficient farm management...In other words, it's good for the environment and the coffee growers industry.

Recycle Digital rechargeables
Find a nearby store that will recycle your digital batteries for you; just go to rbrc.org and type in your zip code. These batteries include cell phone, camcorder, digi cam, etc. In some states it is even ILLEGAL to throw these batteries away. (I know, I didn't know that either!) These states include: Florida, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Vermont

Use Organic Fertilizer
Many traditional fertilizers are made out of petroleum products and are being phased out by legislation due to concerns that they're causing health problems.Companies such as AgraQuest have devised biopesticides, which kill fungi and other material with bacteria that's not harmful to humans. Meanwhile, Novazone has created a system for farmers that kills pests with ozone. Although conventional food processors use this type of technology too, it's more prevalent in the organic world.

Adjust fridge and freezer temps
Refrigerators eat up the most electricity in the household. Maximize efficiency by keeping the fridge at 37°F. and the freezer at 0°F.

Have Plants in the Home

Having houseplants is great for many reasons! They can be purchased to match any decor, they can be beneficial to your health, they can aid in teaching kids responsibility, they can create a more relaxed, serene environment and create an overall more pleasant feel in your home. We all know that plants provide us the oxygen we need to breath, but did you know that plants also absorb pollutants from the air,(besides the carbon dioxide that we exhale) such as smoke and chemical fumes given off by plastics, hygiene products, and office machinery. Of course you can buy air purifying machine to do the same thing, but then you're using energy that could be saved by using house plants instead. Besides, plants are more attractive. One study suggested that students study more effectively in classrooms that had houseplants in them. The calming effect the plants had helped them to concentrate.

Natural Detox

Naturally detoxifying your body is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. I was surprised to learn all the reasons that otherwise healthy people should detoxify their bodies. A natural detox can benefit anyone, not just people who suffer from chemical dependencies. Daily, we encounter household toxins, food toxins, lifestyle toxins and environmental toxins.

An aching body, trouble sleeping, a tired mind, a low energy level and/or just feeling sick in general are signs that your body needs detoxing. It's hard for our bodies to break down and remove all of the additives that we eat and the chemicals we eat and come in contact with on its own.

Antioxidants


Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals otherwise might cause. Examples of antioxidants include beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E, and A, and other substances.

Lemon Juice to Help Detox the Liver


The large amounts of vitamin C in your liver will help it remove many free radicals your liver produces when filtering the bloodstream. Your liver will naturally filter out these toxins over a long period of time. The vitamin c in Lemon Juice will neutralize these free radicals.

Natural Detoxifying Baths


DO NOT take hot water baths, mineral baths or salt baths if you are diabetic, have heart trouble, are pregnant or have high blood pressure.

Taking a hot bath is one of my favorite ways to relax when the baby is sleeping. I light scented candles, turn the lights off and the baby monitor on. And I ALWAYS have a bottle of cold water on hand. This is also a great, natural way to detoxify your body. When you sweat, your pores open up allowing toxins to pass through your skin and out of your body. The hot water brings the toxins to the surface of your skin and as it cools it pulls the toxins out.

Simply adding Epsom salt to your bath (NOT TABLE SALT) can help with the detoxifying process. Other common ingredients that are used to make detox baths include sea salt, ginger, baking soda, sesame oil and Bentonite clay. Soak in bath for 15 to 25 mins, never more than 30. Use hot water, this will aid in the detoxifying process. Drink plenty of water before during and after the bath. Here are a few detox bath recipes.

Detox Bath Recipes


A- 1 cup of epsom salt, sea salt or baking soda to hot bath

B- 1 cup sea salt
1 cup epsom salt
2 cups baking soda
2 tablespoons glycerin (for dry skin)

C- 2 to 3 tablespoons freshly grated ginger or 6 to 8 drops of ginger essential oil
(spot test ginger for sensitive skin)

D- This recipe is a combination of milk, Epsom salt and/or baking soda and scented oil, it's sort of a mix and match recipe. Choose the one type of milk, either Epsom salt or baking soda or both equaling one cup however you choose, and any combination of scented oils.
2 cups dry powdered milk

1/2 cup Epsom salts
1/2 cup baking soda

6 drops rose scented oil
and/or
5 drops vanilla scented oil
and/or
4 drops lavender scented oil
and/or
4 drops lemongrass scented oil

Weight Loss for New Moms

As I mentioned earlier, it is VERY important to listen to your doctors advice now to exercise in the first 6 weeks after giving birth, or however many he/she tells you! I didn't listen, I thought one week early wouldn't hurt, and I was wrong!

But when you are ready to start exercising, here are a few tips that worked WONDERS for me in my pursuit of weight loss.

TIP 1: Stroll your baby(ies). A couple times a week, when the weather was nice I would take my little bundle of joy for a stroll down the sidewalk or in a near by park.


My baby absolutely loves this. He never fusses and often sleeps peacefully during our walks. He loves to look around at the trees and flowers when he is awake. This is also a great way to relax while spending time with your little one. I got this great stroller that has a car seat that can be attached to it for smaller babies, this allows your baby to be facing you while you stroll. Tip 2: Get Some Sleep! Research shows that sufficient sleep positively impacts how effectively your body burns calories.

This will also ensure that you are alert and energized for your day. And there's nothing wrong with an afternoon nap with the baby!

Tip 3: Snack OFTEN.

There are many good reasons to snack in between normal meals. Snacking on healthy foods several times a day keeps your metabolism elevated and working efficiently. Also, snacking will keep you from getting too hungry which is a common reason for over eating during your next meal. Regular meals and snacking will also contribute to your overall productivity by generating clear thoughts and helping you stay energized.

Tip 4: Load up on Veggies FIRST.

One of my biggest weight loss problems is finding a way to get the same satisfied feeling from eating less. If I know that I'm not going to be satisfied until I have something kinda fatty or sugary, I fill up on veggies first. This will allow a much smaller portion of the fatty/sugary food to satisfy my craving.
